Old AudioDigests Free to a Good Home

The MMC and STE Libraries will be giving away 1 year's worth of old AudioDigest CDs. These programs are too old to apply for CE credits but they offer a lot of good information for health professionals. Look for them on the book sale tables at each library beginning
January 16th.

These CDs will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to their popularity we expect them to go quickly.

Subject areas include the following:
Urology, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Otolaryngology, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology,
Obstetrics & Gynecology, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Gastroenterology,
Family Practice, Emergency Medicine, and Anesthesiology. Please note: Not every title is available at both libraries.

Sites Offer Federally Approved Information on HIV Treatment and Research

To mark World AIDS Day 2011 (December 1), a redesigned AIDSinfo Web site has been released, along with the Spanish-language infoSIDA. These sister sites offer federally approved information on HIV treatment and research to health care providers, researchers, people affected by HIV/AIDS, and the public. Resources include medical practice guidelines, treatment and prevention research studies, educational materials for consumers, and information on approved and investigational HIV/AIDS-related drugs.

Information is available in both English and Spanish. AIDSinfo and infoSIDA are services of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), managed by the National Library of Medicine® (NLM®). NLM is the world's largest medical library and a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Redesign Information
Redesign of the sites was based on research on user needs and behaviors and focused on reorganization of content and improved navigation to make information easier to find.

Changes to the sites include:
•Reorganizing content logically into six main categories, including new categories for Education Materials and Mobile Resources and Tools.

•Creating a home page design that gives users a snapshot of the entire Web site, direct access to all site content, and the ability to search for information without having to click away from the home page.

•Improving navigation to reduce the number of clicks necessary to access information anywhere on the sites.

•Providing links to resources such as mobile applications and social media tools (including Facebook and Twitter) throughout the sites to make them accessible from any page.

•Creating a distinct Web address for infoSIDA-http://infoSIDA.nih.gov to make it easier for users to bookmark and for search engines to index infoSIDA.

The Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion creates the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which are the “cornerstone” of the Federal nutrition policy and nutrition education activities. The CNPP was created within the U.S. Department of Agriculture on December 1, 1994, and reports to the Office of the Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services. CNPP’s mission is to improve the health of Americans by developing and promoting dietary guidance that links scientific research to the nutrition needs of consumers.

The AudioDigest programs are more popular than ever, especially now that people can download the MP3s wherever they have internet access.

There are some slight changes in how to apply for CME Credit through AudioDigest.

The big difference is that AudioDigest is asking physicians/providers to sign up for their own AudioDigest account to facilitate tracking CME credits.

      • Use the LIBRARY username and password to access the MP3s and testing info on the Affinity subscription (free to you).
      • Use your PERSONAL AudioDigest Account Number to apply for and track CME Credits. Kathy at AudioDigest can help you create an AudioDigest account at 818-844-3261 (phone).

From the Archives : Dr. William Clark's Medical Bag

This well-used doctor's medical bag belonged to Dr. William "Bill" Clark, a respected surgeon at Mercy Medical Center from 1932-1974.

Some of the contents of Dr. Clark's medical bag included the following :

Various scissors, tweezers, and other tools.

From the Archives : Lab Antiques

The MMC Lab was cleaning out some closets recently and donated the following items to the MMC Library Archives :

Sterile Saline Vessel was used to prepare reagents for laboratory testing and microbiology media for bacterial and fungal cultures.

Haemacytometer was used to perform red-blood cell (RBC) counts and white blood cell (WBC) counts. Read more about this item at the BCMA Medical Museum.

Both items will be on display at the MMC Library for a limited time.

Get Ready : StatRef is Releasing a New User Interface on Aug 1

On August 1, 2011, the new version of STAT!Ref Online will be released. The new site has been optimized for navigating all the healthcare e-resources STAT!Ref has to offer. In the meantime, current subscribers will have the ability to preview the new UI from a link offered on the current STAT!Ref homepage.

The new UI is still the same STAT!Ref – but you will find that it not only has a more state-of-the-art modern look, but is more intuitive and navigable and allows you to find and utilize your eBooks quickly. The new UI will offer more customization such as “last viewed” and more robust customization features. Users can now view virtual “book covers” on a bookshelf, and save books as “favorites”, etc.

NLM's Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed) Now Contains Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Products

The National Library of Medicine Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed) has added complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) products.

CAM products generally consist of dietary supplements derived from botanicals (herbals), "nutraceuticals" (natural and synthetic nonherbals, such as coenzyme Q10), and related products.

The LactMed CAM product records bring together research on these products relevant to breastfeeding. Special emphasis is placed on potential side effects in mothers and infants and on other problems associated with the products. The CAM product records feature a new field for the products' scientific genus and species names.

LactMed currently contains 19 of an expected 100 CAM products (cabbage, comfrey, lecithin, milk thistle, blessed thistle, stinging nettle, St. John's wort, garlic, fenugreek, blue cohosh, black cohosh, raspberry leaf, ginger, coenzyme Q10, borage, caraway, coriander, fennel, anise). These records focus on supplements that are frequently used by nursing mothers, including those claiming to stimulate lactation. Future products will include the most common supplements sold in the United States. A complete list of CAM records in the database can be found by using the search term "complementary therapies" in the main LactMed search box.

LactMed, part of the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) Toxicology Data Network (TOXNET(r)), is a database of drugs and other chemicals to which breastfeeding mothers may be exposed. It includes information on the levels of such substances in breast milk and infant blood, and the possible adverse effects in the nursing infant.

Visual Culture of Medicine : Historical Health Posters Exhibit at Yale

The Kindle Project was funded by a grant through The Mercy Health Foundation to purchase 2 “latest generation” Kindle eBook readers with wi-fi, along with 30 start-up eBook titles.

     • eBooks focus on Management & Leadership
     * Literature and Medicine / Nursing (aka Narrative Medicine)
     • with a few free classics thrown in.

During this initial pilot, Kindles may only be checked out by MMC Staff.

Checkout includes :
1) the Kindle device
2) the USB/power cord
3) a protective leather cover
4) a carrying case
5) the quick-start guide
6) and a book light.

You'll be able to search the internet, but will not be able to download titles wirelessly for the MMC Library Kindles. That said, new title suggestions are encouraged, and may be submitted to the MMC Librarian in advance.

Accessing AudioDigest MP3s Just Got Easier!

Many of you are familiar with these high quality AudioDigest CME/CE programs on audio CD.
Now you can access these files as MP3s.

We’ve created a tutorial complete with screenshots to help you download and listen to AudioDigest MP3 audio files on your own computer or MP3 player. The process is simpler than it used to be!

This tutorial is for Affinity access only because it contains the username and password needed to access the Library subscriptions. Once you have the tutorial saved or printed, you can access and download the AudioDigest MP3s wherever you have internet access.

* You do NOT need to be at an Affinity computer to access the MP3s.

* Although most specialties in the series are available through the above access, for AudioDigest Family Practice, use this Road Map instead.
Please note : To obtain CE Credit, send in the paper test form (request these forms from MMC or STE Libraries) via fax or snail mail to AudioDigest. At this point, A-D cannot track online CMEs for individual members of institutional subscribers (ie Libraries).

Optimized Search Results in MDConsult

MDConsult recently changed the way search results come up.
Now when you put in a search term, the results are optimized as to what seems to make the most sense according to your search terms. Now you can easily jump to the section you want in Recommended Resources [Overview, Signs & Symptoms, Etiology, Diagnosis, Therapy, Management, Prognosis, Screening and Prevention] :

Formerly, results came up all in a jumble, and you had to work hard to figure out if what came up was useful for you. This should make it a lot easier. More like Up-to-Date or eMedicine/Medscape.

This works well for common topics like arthritis, otitis media, diabetes, and other garden variety health conditions.

Not quite what you wanted? On the RIGHT side of the screen, you’ll find options to refine your search. Below that, links for Patient Education Handouts. Obscure topics may still come up with the jumbled keyword results.

Connect with Targeted Nursing Resources at The Advisory Board

The Nursing Executive Center’s Best Practice Crosswalk enables nursing leaders to easily identify Center resources which will help solve their most pressing challenges. Through the Best Practice Crosswalk users can quickly search for resources across six subject areas and 30 sub-topic areas, refining their search results to find solutions which can be implemented on a single nursing unit or across the entire nursing department. In three easy steps, connect with targeted tactics.

• Select topic and sub-topic of interest
Select the topic and subtopic of interest and define the scope of desired resource (either individual unit or the entire nursing department).

• Refine search (if desired)
Refine your search at any time by clicking the “Refine Search” button in the navigation bar at the top of the Best Practice Crosswalk. Easily change the selected topic or subtopic, or refine results by changing the scope of resources included in the search.

• “Click-through” to supporting material
Easily “click-through” the list of Center resources to access materials of interest, including: best practices, publications, online tools, on-demand video presentations, and on-demand web conferences.

Centenary of the death of Venerable Servant of God Mary Frances of the Cross Streitel - March 6, 2011

Mother Frances Streitel founded the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother, who through a dedicated life of apostolic service, vitalized by a contemplative spirit, care for those in need, especially the poor.

On Wednesday, February 25, 1891, the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother (SSM) founded Mercy Medical Center and shaped its ongoing mission to serve the sick and the poor.

March 6, 2011 marks the Centenary of the death of our Venerable Mother Frances. “Mother Frances lived her faith fully, by living the Gospel and being faithful to the traditions of the Church. She always nurtured a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin asking her to be her guide in helping her to remain at the foot of the Cross and to follow the will of God. She is a faithful witness of God’s love, can be an example for us and all the faithful on our journey to holiness.” - Sr. M. Teresina Marra, SSM General Superior

eMedicine merges with Medscape

In January 2011, eMedicine’s excellent clinical content was absorbed by Medscape. The familiar reviews and info are still available, however, Medscape now requires users to log in to access the content.

First-time users will be asked to register for FREE access to eMedicine’s Medscape Reference. If you already have a Medscape username and password, that should work. Creating a personal login is useful if you want to take advantage of the CME offered through eMedicine/Medscape.

We are also offering a generic login as follows for casual users :

You’ll see this generic login info near the eMedicine link on the Library web pages, so don’t feel like you need to commit it to memory.

Old AudioDigest CDs Free to a Good Home

The MMC and STE Libraries will be giving away 1 year's worth of old AudioDigest CDs. While these programs are too old to apply for CE credits, they still offer a lot of good information for Physicians, PAs, Nurses and other health professionals. Look for them on the book sale tables at each library beginning January 24th.

These CDs will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. They are very popular items and we expect them to go quickly.

Clinical Pharmacology / Micromedex

Effective 1/1/11 the official Affinity online drug information reference was changed from Micromedex to Clinical Pharmacology. Similar to Micromedex, Clinical Pharmacology can be used to answer a multitude of medication and patient care related questions, which include:

*   Appropriate medication dosing, indication for use, and monitoring
*   Medication adverse events and concerns
*   Drug identification
*   Drug overdose treatment

Ask a Librarian : Find Full-Text Articles with DOI and the A-Z List

Previously, we showed you how to use the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) in Google to locate the full-text of an article. In come cases, Affinity full-text access to a particular article may reside on the “invisible web” in a subscribed full-text collection like Cinahl-FT or MDConsult, rather than directly at the publisher’s website. Contrary to popular belief, Google tends to miss these deep links. In these cases, we have another tool to help us track down the full-text.

If you know the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) for a particular article (example: 10.1111/j.1526-4610.2007.00665.x), you can often use the DOI for quick access.

Use the search box on the Affinity A-Z Journals List.

How to get there : Affinity Intranet > Library > A-Z Journals List

Click on the drop-down arrow to change the default from PubMedID to DOI.

Enter the DOI and click Search. Tip : A quick cut and paste may be the easiest option to limit typos.

Magically, the citation will appear without you having entered any of the parts.

In this case, the article is “Harry Potter & the Curse of Headache” in the clinical medical journal Headache.
Below the citation, you’ll see our Affinity options for full-text.

The easiest way is to copy and paste the DOI string into a Google search box :

Because the DOI is unique to a particular digital document, the first item that comes up is usually the one you’re looking for :

Clicking on the link will take you to the publisher’s website where the full-text of this particular article lives.

In this case, the article is “Harry Potter & the Curse of Headache” in the clinical journal Headache. It’s the first item in the search results list. Library Services pays for online access to this journal, so getting to the full-text is easy!

Bonus : If the article you are looking for is one of the 12,000 e-journals for which Affinity Library Services has brokered access, you’ll be able to get the full-text hassle-free--as long as you're using an Affinity computer.

Note : If you did this same search at home, the Publisher would ask you for your credit card number to proceed to the full-text. As long as you’re at an Affinity computer, and it’s a publisher who recognizes us, you’ll be able to get through.

What is it ? PubMed Clinical Queries is a powerful search tool to extract relevant clinical research studies and systematic reviews from PubMed.

* Identify the best clinical research, while weeding out the rest.

* Easily search for evidence-based practice systematic reviews, including Cochrane Reviews.
(Really--you'll be amazed at how easy it is to pull up EBM Results!)

How to use Clinical Queries?
PubMed Tutorial Slides about Clinical Queries.
These slides are part of a longer PubMed Tutorial. Watch as much or as little as you like. Slides 8-11 give a good overview of how and when to use PubMed’s Clinical Queries Tool, complete with animated demonstrations.

What changed? The new layout :

The Clinical Queries page has been reconfigured with columns to preview the first five citations of the results for the three research areas. The radio buttons for Clinical Study Categories and the checkboxes for Medical Genetics have been replaced with pull-down menus. While previewing results, you may make alternate menu selections for the Clinical Study Categories and Medical Genetics to modify those results of your search. Citations display in "Recently Added" order and link to the Abstract format in PubMed. "See all" links to the complete results.

From the Archives : Home Remedy Shock Device : Medical Quackery

Also known as an Anti-Doc Battery Electric Quack Medical Device
or, more simply, a home remedy shock device, circa 1890s.

This induction coil electropathy quack device was perceived to have healing properties by delivering electric shocks to the afflicted areas of the body. In it's day, it was used to "keep the doctor away."

This particular specimen is missing the huge dry cell battery.

The label is still intact and readable on the top lid. Click the image to see a larger version that you can read.

This item was donated to the MMC Archives by Mrs. Lynda Kleinschmidt-Johnson in June 2010. This unit is currently on display in the MMC Library.

OvidSP is the interface we use to search Ovid Medline and Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews (including The Cochrane Library). Access Medline (Ovid) and The Cochrane Library on The Affinity Library Website. Test-drive the new version of OvidSP by clicking the “Try it now!” button at the top of all Ovid Search pages.

MedlinePlus Gets a New Look!

On Wednesday, July 14, MedlinePlus (http://medlineplus.gov/) unveiled a completely redesigned site with a fresh look and feel, including a new logo, and distinctive color schemes for English and Spanish pages. The quality consumer health and patient education content is still available in the new design, with some exciting new features and enhancements. The new design emphasizes search, makes navigation more intuitive, and highlights frequently used content.

Some highlights of the new design are:

A Videos & Cool Tools page that makes multimedia content easier to find and searchable (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/videosandcooltools.html).
A Share button on all health topic pages and interactive tutorials that allows you to share links to MedlinePlus through your favorite social networks. See the Diabetic Diet topic page as an example: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/diabeticdiet.html.
A medical dictionary search box on the English homepage for quick look-up of medical terms.

The Joint Commission : Comment on Any Standard at Any Time

In order to continuously gather feedback from customers and stakeholders, The Joint Commission created an online feedback form that allows customers and other interested parties to comment on the standards. This form, available via the Internet, allows for constant customer and stakeholder feedback on the standards— without waiting for a formal field engagement.

In particular, The Joint Commission wants to know which standards customers and stakeholders value the most and those that they consider to be of questionable value to the delivery of quality health care.

Cinahl stands for The Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature. It indexes professional journals in nursing and allied health fields. Consulting the literature is a great way to make an informed decision in your practice.

We are pleased to announce the recent release of several new features, added to our CINAHL subscription.

New Limiters
There are two “Written by a Nurse” limiters:

1946 Bill for Tonsilectomy at Mercy

In 1946, the hospital bill at Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh was $10.35 for a tonsilectomy.

The doctor's bill for the same procedure was $35, including anesthesia.

Reminder - STE Health Science Library - New Location

The St. Elizabeth Hospital Health Science Library has been in its new location for a few months now. Here is a reminder of how to find us and what you'll find when you get here.

The library is located in the basement of the 2006 Hospital Addition near the lab. The most direct way to get to the library is to take the elevator near the gift shop to the lower level. Turn right when you get off the elevator and the library will be the first door on your left.

In addition to books and journals, we have a table and chairs and four computer workstations. Library hours are still Monday - Friday, 8 AM - 4:30 PM, but Affinity staff can use the library 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. (Just ask a security officer to open the door.) The new Health Science Library is open to Affinity Employees. The Resource Café Library near the coffee shop is open to the public.

Please know that, even though our space is smaller, the library staff at St. E's will continue to provide you with resources and information that you can use to care for your patients, perform other duties, and keep informed about your own health and wellness. You can count on us for professional, friendly service, high-quality research, and quick document delivery whether you visit the library in person or use the library remotely.

Question : PubMed is so frustrating. Every time I find the perfect research article, I click to find that the full-text is not available unless I pay a fee.

Answer : The PubMed database includes complete article citation info and abstracts whenever possible. PubMed shows links with options for obtaining the full-text but not the full-text itself. On occasion, these options are free, but publishers often require a fee to see the full-text.

Anyone in the world can use PubMed at http://pubmed.gov/ . However, if you use this PubMed link or the one the Affinity Library Services website, you’ll see additional icons in this version of PubMed, because it ties into our Affinity full-text offerings. Feel free to bookmark this link or make a short-cut. As long as you are using an Affinity computer, or remote access, the full-text links should work. The following icons can help lead you to Affinity full-text :

In some cases where we have relationships with the publishers for certain titles, the publisher icons will also work.

Please be aware that the publisher icons will appear whether or not we have agreements with them for online access.

PubMed indexes thousands of subscription journals, many more than any single library could afford. In the current economic climate, libraries have had to make hard decisions about which subscriptions to maintain, and what to let expire. Fortunately, Affinity Library Services is part of a strong network of medical libraries around the world. If we don’t have immediate access to a particular article you need, the chances are very good that we’ll be able to borrow a copy from another library within a day or so.

Are you looking for patient education materials that are easy-to-read?
Medical concepts and language are very complex. People need easily understandable health information regardless of age, background or reading level. Try the following free sources :

MedlinePlus Easy-To-Read (National Library of Medicine) includes patient education handouts, many in Spanish as well as English.

MedlinePlus Interactive Tutorials
The Patient Education Institute offers a series of interactive tutorials that can be set to run for patients. Viewers can “page” through it if they are comfortable with computers, or it can run by itself. The tutorial will READ the content to the patient, so even if they don't read (or don't like to), they can still take in the info by hearing it. This is also great for people for whom English is not their first language. Using animated graphics each tutorial explains a procedure or condition in easy-to-read language. There's also a printable 1-page text summary that can be used as a handout.

St. Elizabeth Hospital Health Science Professional Library Now Open

We are pleased to announce that the Health Science Professional Library at St. Elizabeth Hospital is now open in its new location.

The new library is much smaller than the previous space and, while there are still network computers and a table and chairs, there is no longer a lounge area. Some of the newspapers and magazines are located in the doctor's lounge (the current one and, eventually, the new one) and others are located in the Resource Café Library.

For safety and security reasons the professional library will only be open to Affinity staff. Patients and visitors will be welcome to use professional library resources, but instead of getting them in person they will need to go to the Resource Cafe Library and request those materials from library staff.

Fiction and general interest audio books are now shelved in the Resource Café Library. (Cassettes are on the spinning rack by the desk and CDs are on the shelf behind the computer terminal on the left.)

In addition to the Book Return outside the professional library there is a locked book return box just outside the entrance to the coffee shop/Resource Café Library (look down and to your right as you enter the coffee shop). Materials from the professional library may be returned there and we will make sure they get back to the right place.

Please know that, even though we are in a different location and in a smaller space, we still offer the same services to which you have grown accustomed and can provide you with the information that you need in order to perform your duties.

While we are happy to see you we understand that it may be difficult for some of you to get to the new library location. If you need information or library materials and cannot come to the library in person, please email, call, or fill out an online library request form and we can send the resources to you via email or Interoffice Mail.

The process of planning the new library and substantially editing the collection to fit into the space has been long but ultimately very rewarding. We are very happy with our new space and look forward to seeing how the rest of the STE Hospital Revitalization progresses.

St. Elizabeth Hospital Health Science Professional Library is Moving!!!

The St. Elizabeth Hospital Health Science Professional Library is moving and will be closed from Friday, February 26 – Wednesday, March 3. Computers and the color copier/printer will be unavailable during that time.

If you need library assistance while we are closed, you are welcome to contact the library at Mercy Medical Center (mmclibrary@affinityhealth.org; 920-223-0342). The librarians at Mercy will be glad to assist you with your research and other projects.

The professional library will reopen in its new location on Thursday, March 4. You will find us in the lower level of the 2006 Hospital Addition near the lab. The most direct way to get to the library will be to take the elevator near the gift shop to the lower level. Exit the elevator, turn right, and you’ll see the library just to the right of a small stairwell.

What will change?

• Library materials and computers will be in the same room.
• For safety and security reasons, access to the new professional library will be limited to Affinity employees. Patients and visitors should be directed to the Resource Café Consumer Health Library by the coffee shop.
• Our collection of fiction and general interest audio books will now be housed in the Resource Café library.

What will stay the same?

• Though smaller, the professional library will still provide four Intranet computers for Affinity Staff, and a table and chairs for those who need work space.
• Library hours will remain the same (8 AM – 4:30 PM Monday through Friday).
• We will continue to provide professional, friendly, high-quality research, document delivery, and other library services for those who use the library from remote locations as well as those who visit in person.
• Affinity employees will still be able to use the library 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. (Those using the library after hours will need to ask a security officer for access.)

As we all work together during this latest hospital revitalization, the library staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital wants to assure you that, while the professional library will be smaller and in a different location, we will continue to strive to provide the most useful information and the highest quality service to assist you in caring for patients and other responsibilities. PubMed is the “free” version of Medline, the journal citation index for medicine and life sciences. It currently covers 19 million citations, and continues to grow.

Badgerlink on the Radio!

BadgerLink staff have been working to get the word out about BadgerLink’s terrific information resources to a larger audience. Starting this month radio listeners around Wisconsin will hear ads on popular radio stations for BadgerLink. These ads were created by the marketing team at EBSCO in cooperation with the staff of Wisconsin's Reference and Loan Library, as part of the company’s package of services. The spot, although created by EBSCO, discusses ALL the information resources and not only those provided by EBSCO. The spot will initially run for the next few weeks.

Do you need to share published articles with a group or team? It’s a great way to make informed decisions. However, did you also know that forwarding a PDF of copyrighted material to a group of people is in direct violation of copyright laws and guidelines? There are work-arounds that are permissible (and legal).

One option is to share a url (or link) to the article like this :

This way, you’re sharing the TRAIL to where the article lives in our licensed databases, not generating multiple copies for all your friends and acquaintances. All your team members have to do is click on the link in the citation to get to the full-text article. Then individuals can decide if they want to print or save the article future reference.

Affinity Library Services has access to over 12,000 journals online. We’ve probably got what you’re looking for.

Contact your Librarians, Michele Matucheski (MMC) or Margo Lambert (STE), for assistance in 1) formatting citations and 2) finding the right url/link for the article you want to share. It’s not always as easy as harvesting the link out of the browser location box. Some of those urls are temporary and won’t work a day later, or they may be ridiculously long. Margo and Michele have some tricks to make that easier and smoother. Just ask us!

Did you know that if you use Google Scholar from an Affinity computer, you’ll be able to tap into the treasure trove of full-text articles made available by Affinity Lbirary Services? It’s true!

Google Scholar is the “smart” Google that searches the published journal literature.

If you try searching Google Scholar from home, publishers will typically ask you for a credit card in order to see full articles. If you use an Affinity computer, the publishers we work with know you’re with Affinity, and will grant you access to the full articles.

PubMed is a powerful search engine that indexes the medical, nursing, and health sciences journal literature. Access millions of scholarly journal articles through PubMed, and zero in on just what you’re looking for!

Remember this added benefit : Using the PubMed link on the Library website ties into Affinity full-text offerings. You’ll get to more “free” full-text by using this link from an Affinity computer. If you find the perfect article(s) but can’t get to the full-text, contact Library Services. We have connections, and most often we can deliver the articles you seek. Just ask us!

They may not be best-sellers, but we are all hearing about the House bill, H.R. 3200: America’s Affordable Health Choices Act and the Senate bill, S. _: Affordable Health Choices Act, together more commonly known and debated as Health Care Reform. These two bills – 1000+ pages from the House and 600+ pages from the Senate - are generating plenty of discussion, but what is really in them? If you are looking for good, readable summaries in order to better understand these two plans, the following may help :

A summary of the S._: Affordable Health Choices Act was prepared and released by the Senate’s Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee on July 15. See the summary here (PDF).

A-Z Journal List: Full Text Electronic and Print Journal Holdings

If you have ever wondered if the Affinity libraries have a specific journal, the answer can be found at your fingertips.

The Library A-Z Journal List can be found on the Library web page on the Affinity Intranet. (It is the first link under “Most Popular Links” on the right.) Browse an alphabetical listing of titles, search for specific titles or do a keyword search and find all titles containing a particular word. You’ll be able to find how far back the titles go and whether they are available in print or electronically. (You can access electronic titles directly from the A-Z List and print or download full-text articles from there.)

Ever wonder where to find the Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act?
It’s Chapter N1 from the Wisconsin State Statutes. Officially, it’s called "The Board of Nursing," from the Department of Regulation and Licensing. However, most Wisconsin nurses know it as “The Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act.” Googling this one doesn't bring up what you might think ...

The Nurse Practice Act describes the standards of practice for nurses (RN and LPNs) in Wisconsin. In some areas, the Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act is intentionally vague. Therefore, we’ve added links for the Board of Nursing’s White Papers and position statements that address timely topics like the following :

A.D.A.M. Consumer Health Information Available in MD Consult

By now many of you know that, beginning in July, we will no longer offer access to the A.D.A.M. Quick Sheets Patient Education / Consumer Health Information.

We are happy to inform you that, even though the A.D.A.M. Quick Sheets will be discontinued, you’ll be able to get the same content in the Patient Education section of MD Consult.

In addition to offering identical A.D.A.M. content, you can also personalize patient handouts if you create an account in MD Consult. (Check the library website for instructions.)

New Links for CAMH Manual and Joint Commission Resources

In order to make it easier to find the Joint Commission Resources, we’ve added a few additional links to the Affinity Libraries Home Page.

1) Look for a new link for The Joint Commission CAMH Manual on the Library Web Home Page in the center column. Since this requires a username and password, we wanted the description to be visible.

2) We also added a link to Joint Commission Resources in the Most Popular Column on the right-hand side. This page also contains a link for the CAMH Manual above.
